Before God Changes Your Actions, He Changes Your Heart

Heart Check: Is Your Life Aligned with Christ?

"Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it." — Proverbs 4:23

Leadership is never simply about what people see.

It's about who we are when no one is watching.

I've become increasingly convinced over the years that most of the challenges we face in leadership, ministry, marriage, parenting, and life are not primarily leadership problems—they're heart problems. We spend tremendous amounts of time trying to improve our skills while neglecting the condition of the heart from which those skills flow.

At C3 Healthy Leadership, we believe healthy leaders create healthy cultures. That doesn't begin with better strategies or stronger personalities. It begins with healthy hearts.

That's why I've built a simple weekly rhythm around three ideas:

Monday: Heart Check Wednesday: Alignment Friday: Next Step

These aren't simply social media themes. They're a framework for spiritual transformation. Each one builds upon the next as God shapes us from the inside out.

Heart Check: Start with What's Happening Inside

Before we can change what we do, we must understand who we are becoming.

Far too often we rush from one responsibility to another without ever stopping long enough to ask the most important questions.

  • How is my heart?
  • What is God revealing in me?
  • Where am I becoming disconnected from Him?

Heart checks are not about condemnation. They are invitations to awareness.

Scripture reminds us in Proverbs 4:23:

"Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it."

Everything.

Your words. Your attitudes. Your relationships. Your leadership. Your responses under pressure.

Everything eventually flows from your heart.

One of the greatest misconceptions in Christianity is believing that spiritual maturity begins with changing our behavior. Jesus consistently taught the opposite. He always addressed the heart first because He knew that outward transformation naturally follows inward transformation.

What is true within us will eventually become visible around us.

Circumstances don't create our character. They reveal it.

Pressure doesn't manufacture what's inside of us. It exposes it.

That's why heart checks matter so much. They help us recognize what God already sees and invite Him to continue His transforming work.

Alignment: Measuring Our Lives by God's Standard

Once we've honestly examined our hearts, we naturally move toward alignment.

Alignment is one of those words that has become popular, but biblically it means something very specific.

Alignment is not comparing ourselves to other people. It isn't asking whether we're doing better than someone else.

Our standard has never been another believer.

Our standard is Jesus Christ.

Too often we evaluate ourselves by looking sideways instead of upward.

"I attend church more." "I serve more." "I know more Scripture."

Those comparisons may make us feel better temporarily, but they never produce transformation.

God's Word is our measuring stick.

Paul reminds us in 2 Timothy 3:16–17 that all Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.

Notice the progression.

Teaching. Rebuking. Correcting. Training.

We love teaching. We're comfortable with encouragement.

Correction?

That's much harder.

Yet correction is one of God's greatest gifts because it redirects us toward the life He created us to live.

Alignment requires humility. It requires surrender. It requires us to ask a difficult question:

Am I willing to hear what God wants to say—even when it challenges what I want to believe?

One of the Greatest Indicators of Spiritual Maturity

One of the questions I've been asking myself lately is this:

How comfortable am I with people speaking truth into my life?

That's not an easy question.

If we're honest, most of us enjoy affirmation much more than correction.

We want encouragement. We appreciate compliments.

But genuine spiritual growth requires something deeper.

It requires teachability.

One of the greatest gifts God has given me is my wife.

There have been many moments over the years when she has lovingly looked at me and said,

"Matt, I'm telling you this because I love you."

Those conversations aren't always comfortable.

But they have always been valuable.

Because I cannot change what I refuse to acknowledge. I cannot grow where I cannot see.

God often uses trusted people to reveal blind spots we would never discover on our own.

The question isn't whether correction will come.

The question is whether we'll receive it with humility.

Truth Without Love Wounds. Love Without Truth Weakens.

The church doesn't need more criticism.

Neither does it need more empty affirmation.

It needs both truth and grace.

Jesus modeled this perfectly.

He loved people deeply while never lowering God's standard.

Some Christian environments become so focused on affirmation that no one is challenged.

Others become so focused on correction that people forget they are loved.

Neither reflects the heart of Christ.

Healthy discipleship always balances truth with grace.

Healthy leadership does the same.

Healthy cultures are built where people know they are deeply loved and lovingly challenged.

When truth is spoken in love, growth becomes possible.

Your Next Step

Transformation doesn't happen overnight.

It happens one surrendered decision at a time.

This week, I want to encourage you to practice the C3 rhythm.

Heart Check Pause. Pray. Ask God, "Lord, what are You showing me about my heart?"

Alignment Open God's Word. Rather than asking what someone else needs to hear, ask, "Where do I need to align my life more closely with Christ?"

Next Step Choose one act of obedience.

Not ten.

One.

Small acts of obedience, repeated consistently, become lives of transformation.

Remember, Christianity is not about managing appearances.

It's about allowing Jesus Christ to transform us from the inside out.

When our hearts become healthy... our leadership becomes healthier. Our marriages become healthier. Our churches become healthier. Our communities become healthier.

Healthy leaders really do create healthy cultures.

At C3 Healthy Leadership, our mission is simple:

Connect with God. Connect with Self. Connect with Others.

Because lasting transformation always begins with the heart.

I'd love to hear from you.

What is one area where God has recently challenged or corrected you that ultimately became a blessing?

Let's start a conversation.
